Search Engine Optimization Steps
Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most valuable skills you can learn. If you apply these search engine optimization steps to your website, your site has a much better chance of ranking in google.
Today, I would like to take the time to discuss search engine optimization and how to use it on your site. On-page optimization is everything you do to your site to help it be more search engine friendly. It allows google, bing and yahoo to look at your keyword and other items on your site to rank it. Ranking is key to online business success. Without your site being ranked, you will not get the traffic you need.
- Meta Tags
- Website URLs
- Internal Linking
- Keyword Development
- Placement on the page
You want to be sure to use all the tags you have available such as your title, header, description and alt tags.
You want to make your title no more than 7 words and no less than 65 characters. This is the space allowed by google to read your title. Anything long will end up cut off and ....... but in the place. For example you would see "'Seo Page Optimizat...." if it were too long.
You want to make sure you use your keywords in the Header of your site. The search engines look for it when analyzing your site. Google searches header tags to help sort out the information you are putting on your page. I am using headers to separate the different topics on this page.
For description you want to try to use your keywords twice if possible. Make your description short but catchy so that anyone looking at it will want to click on it.
ALT Tags are used with any pictures you have on your site. You want to be sure to give them a very meaningful name. It is even recommended that you use your keyword as the alt tag on one of your pictures.
Avoid Stuffing Keywords
While keywords are very relevant to the success of your site, you also want to be careful not to stuff your site with a bunch of them. Google frowns on this and will not rank your site if they think you are doing it.
You want to use your keywords in places that make sense. You should always place it in the first paragraph and the last paragraph. You can also place it once or twice in the middle of your content. Three to four times total on your page is adequate.
Always make sure you are writing to your audience and not to google. Make sure that your articles flow nicely and are a nice read.
Where should you place keywords? I know I have talked a little about this, but here is a list of the best places to put your keywords:
- <H1> ....<H6> header tags
- Within first 25 words on the page
- Within last 25 words on page
Sitemaps allows users and search engines to find pages and posts on your site. Sitemaps also allow search engines to spider your site and record your pages to be indexed. As with any map it gives direction to where you want to go.
Once you have sitemaps on your site, you can post your sitemaps in Google Webmaster Tools and ask google to crawl your site. Google will be able to find all your content this way.
You want to develop a very strong internal linking strategy at the beginning of developing your site. For instance, I could send you on a link to Wealthy Affiliate, but that would send you off my page and to another site. It would be much better to use an internal page that I have written to send you to instead. I would be able to keep you on my site longer and hopefully get your attention.
Decide what are your key pages going to be and how you are going to keep customers on your site longer.
Once you have applied search engine optimization steps listed above, you will notice your ranking on those pages getting better and better. With these strategies alone, you could rank #1 in google on each page.
It takes time to learn search engine optimization. You just need to practice it every time you create a page. You will get better at building a good readable page for your users and rank well in the process.
